San Diego Coastkeeper

Information

In 2004, Project SWELL's first unit was issued to correspond with the 5th grade "Water" kit used by San Diego Unified Schools. The 5th grade unit now reaches 10,668 students. In early 2006, Coastkeeper worked with project partners to complete the 6th grade curriculum and finalize content for the 4th grade SWELL curriculum. We also reviewed the impact the 5th grade curriculum is having on changing children’s behavior towards pollution prevention by conducting pre and post testing on focus groups of schoolchildren to examine their retention rates of Project SWELL material taught to them.

In spring 2006, the second unit, corresponding with 6th grade "Landforms" kit, began circulating to 10,019 students. Professional development is planned for 6th grade educators throughout the remainder of 2007.

The third unit, corresponding with the 4th grade "Ecosystems" kit, rolled out in fall 2006 to 10,661 students. Professional development occurred over the fall and winter of 2006.

Finally, the fourth unit, corresponding to second grade "Pebbles, Sand, and Silt" will roll out in fall 2007 to 10,222 students with professional development available the remainder of 2007.

We are currently planning for the development of the next grade lessons for San Diego Unified School District and look forward to the continued success of reaching every child through the SWELL curriculum.
