San Diego Coastkeeper

Overview

Kelp divers counting invertebrates

Kelp beds are critical marine habitats that provide food and shelter to over 800 species of flora and fauna. But just like the old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest and the rainforests of the Amazon, the giant kelp forests are slowly vanishing from the planet. Without intervention, the kelp ecosystem in Southern California may never regain its historic proportions.

Coastkeeper's Kelp Restoration and Monitoring Program is part of a collaborative regional effort launched by the California Coastkeeper Alliance in 2001. San Diego Baykeeper works closely with a team of concerned volunteer divers to monitor and restore local kelp beds.

Looking to the future, Coastkeeper's Kelp Education, Monitoring and Restoration Program represents an innovative way of enhancing the quality of education in our classrooms, while promoting a conservation ethic among San Diego students and their families that may one day restore our kelp forests to their historic glory.
