San Diego Coastkeeper

Overview

The detrimental activities of the growing human population of San Diego are a large part of the environmental crisis facing our county. Yet, most children (as well as their parents) are unaware that our bays and beaches are dangerously polluted, and ever fewer understand the role we play in this problem and must necessarily play in its solution. Coastkeeper seeks to reverse these trends by not only informing children and the community about the marine environment of San Diego and the sources of pollution that are threatening this important habitat, but also training them to play a vital "hands-on" role in taking back our environment.

Coastkeeper's Water Monitoring, Kelp and Beach Cleanup programs all have a strong education component, and we are working with San Diego City Schools, the City of San Diego, the Port District and other partners to develop a comprehensive water quality and pollution curricula (Project SWELL) in local schools.
