Kelp Cultivation in the Classroom
Kelp cultivation can be a tremendous and unique learning experience for students of all ages.
Using cultivation of giant kelp as one of the focal points of a science curriculum, students participate
in hands-on activities covering such topics as water chemistry, aquiculture, scientific method, life
cycles, ecosystem dynamics, microscope use, cellular division, and algal biology. Even more valuable
is the inclusion of the students and their work into a community-based restoration and monitoring
effort. Kelp plants grown in the classrooms are transplanted into our coastal waters to assist the
local Keeper programs in their restoration endeavors. This unique partnership allows the students
to gain a sense of stewardship over our precious natural resources.
